Californians interested in permanently reducing their outdoor water use can apply for up to a $2,000 rebate to assist in paying for turf/grass removal.

The rebate, administered through the Department of Water Resources, helps Californians replace grass with landscapes requiring much less water. The $24 million program is open to owners of single-family homes.

The rebate program has a bit of paperwork involved; homeowners are warned not to start their turf removal project before receiving an email approval reserving the funds for their project.

Go to this website for program information and the application. The site also includes information about how to remove turf and guidance for less thirsty landscape plants.
